Change of direction at Dallas Brass Band

Having enjoyed an association with the Dallas Brass Band for several years, David Childs has taken the decision to step down as the band’s Principal Conductor. It’s a partnership that has seen the band flourish in recent times, including success at this year’s North American Brass Band Championships, at which David led the band to victory on its NABBA Championship contesting debut in the First Section.

The band has enjoyed various other projects under David’s baton, including concerts with Dallas Symphony’s Elmer Churampi, shared concerts with the University of North Texas Brass Band and most recently, a fantastic anniversary concert with guest soloist, Owen Farr. However, an increasingly busy professional schedule has led to David’s decision to step down: “I’ve had a great time working with the musicians of the Dallas Brass Band and it's been a pleasure to share the podium with resident conductors, Daniel Cook and more recently, Grant Jameson. Together, we’ve made huge strides forward in a short space of time, but with a busy schedule for 2023, I feel the time is right to step aside, providing someone else with the opportunity to continue the development of this wonderful band.”

Dallas Brass Band’s President, founder and principal baritone, Andrew Wainwright, paid tribute to David’s impact on the organisation, commenting: “We are very sorry that David is unable to continue with Dallas Brass, but would like to thank him most sincerely for the tremendous work he has done during his time with the band. David, along with Daniel Cook and Grant Jameson, has taken the band to new levels, culminating in a magnificent performance at NABBA which earnt the band victory in the 1st Section with the highest points total in the entire competition. David has also contributed artistically to the band in a significant way, devising highly innovative concert programmes that have proved very popular with audiences and players alike. We very much hope to work with David in the future as his schedule allows, but look forward to welcoming Grant Jameson as our full time conductor. Grant has proven himself as a conductor of real pedigree when called upon, and having worked closely with David for some years now, we anticipate a seamless transition and look forward to many exciting years to come with Grant at the helm.”

David’s final appearance as Principal Conductor with the Dallas Brass Band will take place on December 4th at the annual Christmas with The Salvation Army concert at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church, Dallas. The following week, Grant Jameson will make his debut as the band’s full-time conductor at its Christmas concert at Ventana Buckner.
