CD: War Memorials

BBW Chief Contributor, Christhopher Thomas, recently reviewed a most compelling new release featuring two bands and three conductors.

Let me say right away that it is well nigh impossible to overstate the importance of this compelling new release on the NMC label. Brass bands recordings that bridge the gap between the banding and classical worlds have been precious few in recent times - just one reason why this recording is a milestone that is truly worthy of our attention.    

Robin Holloway’s two War Memorials, Men Marching and From Hills and Valleys, date from the 1980s and are elusive, deeply personal works.
