Music: Colours in Rain

Composer Rodney Newton reviews the latest publication from Grimethorpe Colliery Band's Young Composer in Residence, Dan Hall

Described by the composer as a fanfare, Colours in Rain breaks away from the more conventional form, instead beginning with an angular motif in the cornet section - a repetitive single bar emulating the sound and nature of rain. The lower band follows, with a powerful unison fanfare line, before a melodic theme is introduced exploiting a multitude of different colours and connotations.

With solos for principal cornet and solo euphonium the theme is passed around the ensemble very effectively until the climax of the piece, a recapitulation of each individual motif, is heard with striking colour and rapid rhythmic motion. Although much easier to play than the composer’s popular Al Sharq, this work is still a tricky number, and will require diligent rehearsal, particularly when fine balancing the rain motif. Without doubt, Colours in Rain represents another fine addition to the repertoire from this up and coming composer.
