CD: Quintessence - The Music of Robert Redhead

Fairey Band conducted by John Ward and Robert Redhead
Guest soloist: Owen Farr

Christopher Thomas reviews the fourth CD release devised by John Ward for the Clarence Adoo Trust and finds another instalment to a growing and important survey of Salvationist brass band repertoire.

With previous discs devoted to Goffin, Leidzen and classical arrangements by Salvationist musicians, the spotlight this time falls on Robert Redhead; Manchester born, but for many years resident in Canada where whilst now retired, he still enjoys an extremely active musical life.

It is also the first disc to feature Fairey Band, which responds with warmth and empathy to both the music and John Ward’s direction throughout.

Any survey of Redhead’s music would be incomplete without the 1996 National Final test-piece, Isaiah 40 and Fairey’s performance is impressive for the depths of its expressive lyricism, abundant detail and precision in the faster outer sections of the score. Yet the greatest delights are arguably found in the lesser-known pieces. The opening work, A Fanfare of Praise, sets a majestic tone, progressing from a sonorous opening chorale to a joyous rhythmic conclusion in a piece that proved pioneering in SA worship for its upbeat, contemporary style and language.

Written for this recording, Tenore; Theme and Variations is an exceptional vehicle for the talents of tenor horn, Owen Farr, whose rich, even tone and flawless articulation are a marvel, whilst the sparkling march, Picton Citadel, the more substantial Corpus Christi and Quintessence are played with both commitment and relish.

Most special is I Will follow Thee conducted by Redhead, in which one senses his respect in this touchingly affectionate treatment of a song particulary close to his heart - a deeply personal association that emanates throughout Fairey’s performance.
