CD: On My Way
Euphonium: Mauro MartinsPortuguese Air Force Band | Conductor - António Rosado
Mauro Martins’ second solo CD, ‘On My Way’, showcases his exceptional talent as a Portuguese euphonium soloist and is a worthy follow-up to his first album, ‘Flow’. However, ‘On My Way’ offers an even more substantial listening experience featuring two remarkable concerti: Johan De Meij’s UFO Concerto and Jukka Linkola’s Euphonium Concerto. Both pieces are challenging and technically demanding, but Martins rises to the occasion, delivering a performance that is both technically flawless and musically compelling.
One of the standout elements of this album is the superb collaboration between Martins and the Portuguese Air Force Band. Underpinning every track is the band’s precise, sensitive accompaniment, which blends seamlessly with Martins’ euphonium, allowing his artistry to shine. The sound quality of the recording is excellent, with every nuance of both soloist and ensemble clearly captured, resulting in a polished and engaging listening experience.
Martins’ playing throughout is a masterclass in technique, but what truly sets him apart is his mature musicality and sense of phrasing. He demonstrates an innate ability to shape melodies and bring out the distinct character of each piece that is particularly evident in Gilles Rocha’s Blind Spot, a dynamic and multifaceted work in which Martins navigates the contrasting section, from the energetic, funky opening to the transparent, lyrical middle section, effortlessly, guiding the listener through the shifts in mood and style with ease and finesse.
‘On My Way’ is not only an excellent showcase of Mauro Martins’ skill, but also a testament to the quality of the Adams Euphonium and Denis Wick products he plays. This album highlights his continued rise in the brass world, and will surely be appreciated by euphonium enthusiasts and lovers of brass music alike.
