Music: Excelsis!

Composed by Stephen Pondsford
Published by Prima Vista Musikk

Excelsis! portrays something of the wonder and excitement of the Christmas story. A mysterious opening, punctuated by atmospheric percussion and solo lines, builds to a rhythmic allegro with hints of traditional Christmas carols to be heard around the band. The music then gives way to a central nativity themed section, based on John W. Peterson’s beautiful lullaby, Sleep Holy Child.

This offers bands a chance to demonstrate their expressive qualities, whilst testing control in the quietest dynamics. Jumping suddenly back into life, more traditional carols reach the listener before culminating in a broad, triumphant rendition of Hark the Herald Angels Sing. Not without its technical and musical challenges, this exciting work has all the ingredients of a successful crowd- pleaser during the Christmas season.
