Music: We Shall Remember Them

Perhaps the embodiment of the phrase ‘simple, yet effective’, Richard Grantham’s We Shall Remember Them proves a technically modest, yet poignant and stirring piece of music. This is the key to the success of the work, which is largely made up of relatively simple moving lines and chordal writing, rather than presenting intimidating technical hurdles. As a result, it provides all standards of band with an easily playable remembrance-themed work though, as ever, the challenges of balance, tuning and dynamic contrast should not be underestimated.
A solemn, brooding introduction from the lower band precedes a gradual increase in texture and dynamic, forming a quite touching musical picture, complete with solo cornet interjections suitably reminiscent of The Last Post. The piece progresses to a majestic climax with a ‘Wagnerian’ touch of intensity, before rapidly receding to pianissimo, and a final distant bugle call to close. With Remembrance Day just around the corner, We Shall Remember Them will be a suitably reverent and affecting addition to any concert connected to the occasion.
