Serenity – O Magnum Mysterium

In the aptly named Serenity, we have a choral work that converts beautifully into the brass band medium. Hendrik de Boer sensitively translates the rich extended harmony and gentle lyricism to fit the warm brass band sounds like a glove.
Sustained chordal writing and spacious melodic lines make Serenity technically unassuming, though it should not be underestimated, as the score will test any band’s command of intonation and dynamic control.
Interestingly, the solo euphonium takes the role of the solo cello, requiring soaring counter lines that complement the ensemble’s chordal work (challenging in terms of range, although an ossia is provided). Given the growing popularity of choral transcriptions, Serenity’s simple beauty will make the work a very welcome addition to the concert repertoire.
