Wallace Collection at Centaur Finals
The Wallace Collection, led by John Wallace CBE, will be performing workshops and recitals at the Cheltenham National Finals on 17 and 18 September, in The Centaur, Cheltenham Racecourse.
Reborn for the 21st Century, The Wallace Collection has a passion for promoting the diverse world of brass music, and its workshops and recitals at Cheltenham will aim to “inspire, entertain, develop, educate and transform this vital musical genre,” said John Wallace CBE.
The group’s two short concerts will take place at the end of the first competing sections on Saturday and Sunday, when it will perform an entertaining cross-section of classics from the chamber music repertoire for brass. Said John Wallace: “The recitals will be a reflection of brass bands regularly using chamber music as a contrast to their concert programmes, and because solo/ensemble playing has long been an important part of the brass band culture. We will be using small-bore Victorian instruments for which the music was originally written, on which it sounds surprisingly different, and we hope that our entertaining programme will have emotional appeal and tickle the intellect.”
Players of all abilities are also invited to join The Wallace Collection in the Festival Restaurant of The Centaur (next to the Gold Cup Restaurant, accessed via the Hall of Fame entrance) to participate in free workshops following Section 3 on the Saturday (17th) and Section 2 on the Sunday (18th).
The relaxed and informal workshops aim to provide an ideal opportunity to have some fun, whilst learning lots of practice and performance techniques on topics from breathing and relaxation, to rhythm and playing in time. Just take along your instrument to participate in this great opportunity to discover the secrets behind developing your playing.
Brass Band World will be in Cheltenham to savour all the action, so to read a full retrospective of this important event, together with photos, subscribe here.
Tickets for the National Brass Band Championships Sections 1-4 Finals are only available from the Centaur Box Office on the day of the contest.
