Cheltenham judges give pointers for bands aiming high!

The National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain Sections 1-4 Finals will take place at Cheltenham Racecourse later this month (17 and 18 September), where more than 70 bands will descend on The Centaur to compete for ‘National’ glory.

At 9.30am on Saturday (17 September) Section 2 bands will get proceedings underway aiming to impress adjudicators, Alan Fernie and Steven Sykes, on Images for Brass by Stephen Bulla. The Section 4 finalists, adjudicated by Dr. Robert Childs and Gary Davies, will follow Section 2 (approx. 3.00pm) tackling Kenneth Downie’s Music from Kantara.

By 9.30am on Sunday (18th September) David Childs and Richard Marshall will be seated in the ‘box’ to judge Section 3 contenders performing Lake of the Moon by Kevin Houben, whilst John Maines and Alan Morrison will select the new Section 1 Champion, as contenders on Joseph Horovitz’s Ballet for Band take the stage from approximately 4.00pm.

In collaboration with the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators, Brass Band World is delighted to bring the views of four judges who will be in the ‘box’ at Cheltenham - Alan Morrison, Steve Sykes, David Childs and Dr. Robert Childs. What will they be looking for? Find out by reading BBW's ‘View from the box’ article (appearing in this month’s magazine) available to all as a free PDF download. Simply click on the link below:
