5 million yen up for grabs in Osaka

The 9th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition and Festa, run by the Japan Chamber Music Foundation, will be held between 13-21 May 2017 in Osaka, Japan, and is open for entries.

The forthcoming Competition comprises: Section One - string quartet; Section 2: wind quintet, saxophone quartet and brass quintet; Festa: chamber music ensembles of two-six musicians for any combination of instruments.

Section 1 involves three rounds and a Final, and Section 2 involves two rounds and a Final, whilst the Festa has two preliminary rounds and a Final. The Finals of sections 1 and 2 will be held the same day as the Awards Ceremony, at the conclusion of the Final of the Festa.

Applicants for sections 1 and 2 must be 35 and under, but there is no age limit on Chamber Music Festa competitors, which can play any repertoire.

The distinguished brass jurors include former New York Philharmonic Principal Trumpet, Professor Philip Smith, trombonist Satoshi Kamiya and French horn player, Prof. Radovan Vlatkovi.

The total prize money on offer is fabulous at £5,000,000 yen split as: 3,000,000 yen first prize, 1,500,000 yen second prize and 1,000,000 yen third prize per section. Also, the airfares and accommodation of all overseas competitors will be subsidised, although ensembles pay an entry fee.

Two prize-winners’ concerts will be staged on 22 May 2017 in Osaka and 23 May in Tokyo, and the deadline for applications is 20 October this year.
