Lower Brass Day at Portsmouth Citadel
On Saturday 9 April, Portsmouth Citadel Band hosted the first in a series of Brass Workshops with tutors Derick Kane (euphonium) Stephen Kane (baritone) and Ady Clee (tuba).
The event attracted 25 candidates that don't usually attend Portsmouth Citadel and some of had never previously been to the Salvation Army. They all took part in morning and afternoon sessions, which included sectional rehearsals and massed ensemble playing. There was also an opportunity to ask the tutors questions as candidates sought to know all manner of information, from the technique used to achieve a good vibrato to the tutors’ favourite performance memories.
In the evening, the groups had the opportunity to showcase their talents with a concert including Portsmouth Citadel Band, Portsmouth and Southsea Singing Companies and brilliant Solos from our guests, including Song of the Brother (Stephen Kane) Travelling Along (Derick Kane) and Standing on the Promises (Ady Clee). Portsmouth Citadel Band concluded the evening with Edward Gregson's Variations on Laudate Dominum.
Said a spokesman for Portsmouth Citadel band: “The day was a resounding success, which saw our candidates leave with a sense of enjoyment and satisfaction, and speaking of the warm welcome they had received at The Salvation Army.”
