New Sop for Cory
Following the departure of Ian Roberts, Cory Band has appointed Martin Britt to the soprano cornet position. The band has also entered into a partnership with Schilke Musical Instruments to support the new arrangement, and the company will sponsor the soprano cornet seat.
Martin, a Schilke Artist, studied at the Royal Academy of Music with James Watson and has had a wide-ranging trumpet and then soprano cornet career having played with many of the leading bands in the UK and further afield in Europe and Australasia.
Speaking about the appointment, Cory Band Musical Director Philip Harper commented: “Martin has been a friend of the band for over ten years and has played many times with us, especially throughout 2024, so we’re very pleased to be able to link up in a more permanent way with this appointment. It’s an unusual situation for Cory because Martin lives in Surrey, nearly 200 miles from the bandroom. We are therefore delighted that Martin has the energy and commitment required to undertake this, and also to link up with Schilke Musical Instruments who will become sponsor seat sponsor of the Cory Band.
“Due to the significant distances involved and the impracticality of getting to every rehearsal, Martin’s appointment will give the opportunity for the band also to work with local soprano cornet players, with Martin’s support, giving them the opportunity to develop their skills and build up experience in this most specialist of seats.”
Martin commented: “I’m delighted to be able to take up the position with Cory. To do that with the support of Schilke Music Products brings together two organisations that have long since been close to my heart and that’s something special to me.”
