German Brass Band expertise reaches the Eastern edge
On 27 October 2024, the Brass Band BlechKLANG on behalf of the Jena Brass Band Competence Centre brought a special workshop and concert to Herrnhut, Saxony, the easternmost part of Germany. Led by Alexander Richter, the musical director of BlechKLANG and head of the competence centre, alongside solo euphonium player and “Head of Brass” of Orchestra School KLANGwelt Andrea Hobson, the day’s workshop was aptly titled “Cinema for the Ears.”
The goal was to introduce musicians from a range of backgrounds to the distinctive sound of a brass band, many for the very first time. Given the unique setup, some participants even used concert band instruments instead of traditional brass band instruments, making this a truly accessible entry into the world of brass banding.
The workshop kicked off early, diving straight into sectional rehearsals, with Richter and Hobson guiding participants through the brass band’s intricacies. From theory to practice, the day struck a harmonious balance, providing participants with a genuine taste of the genre and a hands-on experience of brass band performance.
The day’s highlight was the evening concert in Herrnhut’s packed church hall, where the workshop attendees opened the concert alongside Brass Band BlechKLANG. Together, over 50 musicians performed the evocative classic “Stal Himmel,” setting an atmospheric tone that thrilled the audience. From there, BlechKLANG led the audience on a musical journey to the Scottish Highlands, featuring selections from their program "Hymn of the Highlands“.
Philip Sparke’s powerful suite took centre stage, whisking listeners away to Scotland’s sweeping landscapes and immersing them in the quintessential sound of a brass band. After three encores, rounds of applause, and a standing ovation, the audience reluctantly let the band leave the stage.
Reflecting on the event, Alexander Richter shared, “Our journey to the eastern edge of Germany was a fantastic experience. I’m convinced that we sparked a genuine enthusiasm for brass band music here. To witness such engagement and excitement in such a short time is a reminder of the power this genre has to captivate a fresh audience. Again and again.”
