Graham encourages Young Composers

Commenting on social media renowned composer Peter Graham reminisced about the impact entering a composing competition had on his own career and urges young composers to take up the most recent opportunity offered by the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. He stated, “In 1980 I wrote and submitted ‘Dimensions’ for a Young Composer competition. It won first prize and was eventually published by Boosey & Hawkes and set for an area contest. This year the NYBBGB are running a similar competition with prize money and performances by the band under conductor Martyn Brabbins. If you are under 30 on January 1st next year get your entry in! A fantastic opportunity to have your work played by first class musicians.”

This year’s competition offers young composers a blank canvas for unrestricted creative expression, inviting them to explore a myriad of musical styles and genres. Participants are encouraged to craft original works for brass band lasting between three and six minutes, with an emphasis on capturing the essence of their artistic vision. The work must be new, unpublished and not have been publicly performed.

Three winners and three runners up will be chosen from the entries by the panel of judges, Maestro Martyn Brabbins, Composer Gavin Higgins and NYBBGB’s Director of Artistic Planning Dr Robert Childs. Each winner will receive a cash prize of £750, a mentoring opportunity and their pieces will be rehearsed and performed at NYBBGB courses and concerts in 2025. Each runner up will receive a cash prize of £250 and feedback via a one-to-one coaching phone call with a member of the judging panel. If there is a suitable opportunity it may be possible for the NYBBGB to perform one or more of the runner-up pieces also.
