New Solo Trombone at RTB

Rothwell Temperance Band has announced that the vastly experienced, and highly respected Michael Rath Artist, Paul Woodward, has joined the band on Principal Trombone. Paul, born in Oldham, is a fourth-generation trombonist who was introduced to the instrument by his father, who was an accomplished trombonist within the Salvation Army. In 2003 Paul joined Black Dyke Band, and in 2004 was appointed as the band’s first ever Co-Principal Trombone player. After 16 successful years with Black Dyke, Paul took the decision in June 2019 to step down from his role to dedicate more time to his ever-increasing solo career.

Many years of high-profile banding within the Salvation Army have been enjoyed by Paul. He spent several years as Principal Trombonist of Leeds West Hunslet Band and then the Castleford Citadel Band. During this period, Paul was also Principal Trombone of the “A” Band from the famous Cobham Hall Music School, as well as Principal Trombone with both the Household Troops Band and Egon Virtuosi Brass. Paul is in constant international demand, and has had the pleasure of being a soloist with notable “SA Bands” including the New York Staff Band and Chicago Staff Band. Paul’s illustrious playing career has taken him all over the world, with overseas performances in: Chicago, Florida, Philadelphia, Ireland, Holland, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Singapore, and Bermuda. A loving family man, Paul has embedded into the RTB family effortlessly over the past weeks and we are delighted to have him on board. He brings a wealth of knowledge, and of course ability to the band.

MD Dave Roberts commented, “I was delighted when Paul approached me to say that his work situation had changed and he would have the time to be able join us here at Rothwell. He came highly recommended by many people, he has added leadership and experience for us. It’s a wonderful signing for the band. Already, he has really bought into the team spirit of RTB. He will be a real asset for us, I’m sure.” Paul added, “I’m thrilled to be invited to join RTB. Dave and the band have already been so welcoming and I have been very impressed by the quality of musicianship throughout the band - and what a great bunch of people they are! I look forward to a successful future with the band.”
