Porthouse wins Conn Selmer Scholarship

Conn-Selmer Europe has announced that cornet player Harry Porthouse has been selected as the recipient of the 2024 Scholarship programme. Launched in 2022, the scholarship programme is designed to provide financial support and professional development opportunities to outstanding and talented young musicians.

Currently studying under the tutelage of Dr Roger Webster at the Royal Northern College of Music, Harry has been awarded this prestigious scholarship in recognition of his outstanding talent and dedication to brass music. Harry, who recently took up the role of principal cornet with the renowned Rothwell Temperance band, hails from a distinguished brass banding family. He began his musical journey with the Tredegar Band at just 15 years old and already has a vast experience within the brass band community. Over the past few years Harry has been a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, in addition to taking part in courses with the National Youth Brass Bands of Scotland, Wales and Switzerland.

The Conn-Selmer Europe Scholarship offers Harry a range of valuable benefits designed to support his musical development:
· £500 Bursary Credit: This can be used towards the purchase of any Conn-Selmer product or for lessons and instruction with any Conn-Selmer Artist, arranged privately and subject to availability and Conn-Selmer Europe approval.
· Scholar's Discount: Harry will receive a 10% discount on personal instruments and accessories when ordered directly through Conn-Selmer Europe.
· Loan Instrument: Harry has chosen a Bach Stradivarius 184L Bb Cornet in Silver as his instrument of choice for the scholarship period. He also has the opportunity to purchase this instrument at an Artist price during the scholarship term.
· Artist Roster: The Scholarship beneficiary will have the opportunity to potentially become a full artist on the Conn Selmer artist roster once the year is complete.

A spokesperson for the company explained, “Conn-Selmer Europe is committed to nurturing the next generation of musicians, and this scholarship is part of our ongoing mission to support talented young artists in their musical journeys. We are thrilled to have Harry as our 2024 Scholar and look forward to following his progress and contributions to the brass banding community.”

European Vice President Charles Bozon added, “We are proud and delighted to continue our scholarship programme to support the UK’s finest upcoming young musicians. I congratulate Harry, who has selected a Bach Stradivarius 184L Bb Cornet in Silver as his instrument of choice for the coming year and we’re excited to see where his musical journey takes him. We will not only support Harry with his instrument of choice, but also offer continuous assistance and access to tuition and mentorship from Conn-Selmer artists, to help him develop a career as a professional musician.”

In response to his success Harry commented, “This is an amazing opportunity, and it’s one I am delighted and honoured to accept! To be recognised by a company with such heritage means a great deal to me and I’ll do my very best to represent the brand with the respect it deserves.”
