Four in a Row for Black Dyke

Congratulations to Black Dyke on an emphatic victory at the Yorkshire regional Championships last weekend. The current National Champions put on a display that left few in doubt of the band’s intent of securing a fourth successive win in Huddersfield. Led by Professor Nicholas Childs the band gave an impressive account of Philip Sparke’s ‘Variations on an Enigma’ leading adjudicator Tom Davoren to comment, “Thank you for a performance of true substance; colourful, exciting and of technical mastery.” Fellow judge Steve Sykes was in agreement that the performance was “fabulous… seriously high end brass and percussion”. Afterwards the MD commented on the band’s success stating, “That was a huge thrill. This win is for Ian Thompson (a former band trustee), who recently passed away. I know he would have been just as thrilled as we are, and one of the first to congratulate us all. I really couldn't have asked for more today.”

Brighouse & Rastrick under Garry Cutt had to be content with the runner-up spot on this occasion, but with a confident performance the band was assured of a comfortable qualification for the National Championships in October. Joining the bands in London will be third placed Carlton Main Frickley Colliery. The band gave an assured account of the set-work, expertly directed by Allan Withington.

Congratulations are also owed to Yorkshire Imperial, South Yorkshire Police, Barnsley Metropolitan, Loxley Silver the winners of their respective sections. Fellow qualifiers Crofton Silver, Emley Brass, Clifton & Lightcliffe and Friendly Band will be joining them to compete for National honours later this year in Cheltenham. Full results are below and a review of the event will appear in the next issue of Brass Band World magazine.
