Brass Band Conference 2023

BBE has released information regarding the forthcoming Brass Band Conference, due to take place on 7th October. On arrival attendees should make their way over to the Oastler building where teas and coffees will be served from 9.45am. Delegate badges can then be collected with the opportunity to register for any remaining Brass Band Archive tour places as well as submitting any questions for Darren Henley’s Q & A session scheduled for 12.45pm.

The welcome address and keynote speech will be given by Gavin Higgins at 10.30am. Gavin is one of Britain's most exciting and gifted compositional talents. He comes from a long lineage of working-class brass band musicians dating back to 1895 and his passion for this heritage has resulted in a number of vigorous, daring works for brass. His biggest and most ambitious piece to date, the ‘ingenuous work‘ Concerto Grosso for Brass Band and Orchestra was premiered at the 2022 BBC Proms to great acclaim and has led to him winning a Sky Arts Award as well as a Royal Philharmonic Society Award in the Large-Scale Composition category for the work, which was premiered by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (of which Gavin is currently Composer in Association) and Tredegar Band. Gavin will discuss topics including arts funding, investing in composers, innovation, boldness, and bravery in repertoire choices.

Further details of the day, including the breakout sessions available, can be found at the Conference page: https://www.bbe.org.uk/conference
