GUS Wins Dr Martin Wainstone Cup

The Dr Martin Wainstone Cup contest took place today, Sunday September 10th, at the Princess Alexandra Theatre, Yarm. Sadly only four bands were able to take part, however there was certainly much for adjudicator Sandy Sith to enjoy. Each band performed a march, solo and substantial set piece to delight and entertain the audience. GUS were announced as winners, by a single point, over runners-up City of Bradford by virtue of a wonderful performance which included ‘Knight Templar’, ‘Cappriccio Brilliante’ and ‘Sand and Stars’.

Commenting on the win a spokesperson from the band stated, “We’re so pleased to have won The Dr Martin Contest today after working hard on our chosen pieces. A special well done to our featured soloist, Rob Fleming who did a spectacular job in Capriccio Brilliante, our percussion section for winning “Best Percussion” and to our MD, Christopher Bond on his first contest performance with the band! This was our first time at the competition and we were blown away by the excellent contest organisation, phenomenal venue and facilities, and friendliness of volunteers! Now it’s time for a well-deserved night off for us tomorrow, before getting straight into preparations for our 90th Anniversary Celebration Concert on 24th September.”
