National Youth Harry Mortimer Competition

The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain has just started its summer course at Wymondham College under the baton of American conductor Sarah Ioannides. The day after principal seats were decided upon through a series of auditions (listed below), the talented winners of Easter’s Katie Ogden Contest competed in the Harry Mortimer Solo Competition.

Congratulations to Daniel Marsh for his winning performance of Martin Ellerby’s Concerto for Tenor Horn, and to Victoria Alvarez on winning the Junior Harry Mortimer Prize on percussion. Operational Manager Richard Milton stated, “Thank you to all the members of the youth band who competed today, the standard, as always, was phenomenal and all the performances were truly inspirational. Thank you also to our adjudicators, Dr Robert Childs, Sarah Ioannides and Colonel David Barringer for their knowledgable judgement and pearls of wisdom. A big thank you also to our accompanist, Jonathan Musgrave, and Carl Woodman for his wonderful compèring throughout the afternoon.”

John Squires-Evans, a staff member on the course, added “What an incredible group of young performers, amazing virtuosity, a real variety of styles and genres from Chopin to a contemporary world premier, swing and jazz. I am so excited by the partnership between The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and The Royal Corps of Army Music. Which saw David Barringer join the adjudicating panel of Sarah Ioannides and Bob Childs.”

The band will conclude its course with a concert at Saffron Hall, Saffron Walden on Saturday 5th August (7.00pm). The theme this year is 'Music from around the World' and will feature repertoire from Glinka to Respighi, William Himes to Peter Graham. The guest soloist is Scott Hartmann, the remarkable trombonist who plays with Brass Band of Battle Creek as well as being Professor of Trombone at Yale University.
