Grimethorpe Colliery Band has announced that the winner of the band’s first annual composition competition is Andrew Wainwright for his composition, ‘Fallen Souls’. Andrew will receive the £1,000 first prize. In second place was Werner De Bleser for his composition ‘Mirror’ and the under 24 prize went to Nicholas Ma and his composition ‘Carnival of Masks’. Both composers will also receive £300.

There were 105 entries from across the World, with 17 semi-finalists and a final trio of finalists. Commenting on his success on social media Andrew stated, "Thrilled to have won the Grimethorpe Colliery Band Composition Competition! It was special to have been able to attend the band's concert yesterday in their hometown with my parents where the results were announced. Well done to all who took part and thanks to the band for holding such a great initiative.

The band was absolutely delighted with the standard of the compositions and were proud to give ‘Fallen Souls’ and ‘Mirror’ their world premiere performances in concert last weekend. The band is now finalising details of a new recording that will feature some of the competition composition entries.
