National High Five for Wellington

Congratulations to Wellington Brass, who proved their dominance in Dunedin last weekend by winning the A Grade New Zealand National title under MD, David Bremner, for an unprecedented fifth consecutive time. The band secured its win of the Gold Cup National Trophy in emphatic manner delivering outstanding renditions of the selected sacred item as well as the set-work, 'Concerto No. 1' by Derek Bourgeois and the band’s own-choice of 'Audivi Media Nocte' by Oliver Waespi. In addition, David Bremner once again won the prestigious KGL Smith and Mervyn Waters Memorial Trophies, whilst flugel star Brad Mancer took the 'Best Soloist' award in the set-test.

Commenting on the victory David Bremner stated, “I'm just so proud of the band's performances over the weekend. They worked so hard in the build-up and played with such passion and precision. To be the first band in the event's history to win 5 in a row is very special, and testament to how hard this organisation works. We will enjoy this and then get to work on making it 6!"

For the second successive year North Shore Brass ended as the runners-up with a rejuvenated Woolston Brass under Tyme Marsters placed third by adjudicator Tom Davoren. Hutt City Brass claimed the B Grade title, Woolston Concert Brass took first place in Grade C with Rangiora RSA Club Band winning the D Grade. Full results can be viewed below:
