ITA Awards 2023

 

The International Trombone Association (ITA) recently made its 2023 award presentations. Jörgen van Rijen was the recipient of the ITA 2023 award, presented every year to an individual who has greatly influenced the field of trombone. Principal trombonist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, Jörgen van Rijen, is also much in demand as a soloist with a special commitment to promoting his instrument, developing new repertoire for the trombone and bringing the existing repertoire to a broader audience.

Dudley Bright, the former principal trombone of the London Symphony Orchestra, was the  2023 recipient of the prestigious Neill Humfeld Award. This award recognizes outstanding trombone teaching in the profession while honoring the teaching excellence of the late Neill Humfeld, Humfeld (1928-1982) was a professor at East Texas University and a past president of the ITA. Dudley Bright's professional career began in the Salvation Army, before moving into orchestral roles with the Halle and Philharmonia Orchestras. He was principal trombone at the LSO from 2001 to 2018 and is Professor of Trombone at the Royal Academy of Music.

ITA Lifetime Achievement Awards were also presented to Vivian Lee and Michael Powell for contributions to the trombone profession over their long careers.
