Childs helps Perth Celebrate

On Sunday 2nd April Dr Robert Childs was guest soloist in a concert held in Perth Town Hall to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of The City of Perth Brass Band. The concert was conducted by Major Peter O’Connor the current Music Director and also featured appearances by two former music directors Brian Underwood and George Franklin, the latter being one hundred and one years old!

The band premiered a work composed by Tim Middleton entitled ‘City Fanfare and Celebration’ and also featured ‘City Centenary’ by Wayne Duncan, written for the band’s centenary celebration. Dr Childs performed ‘Jeanie with The Light Brown Hair’ and ‘Grandfathers Clock’ to the delight of the audience, showcasing his inimitable sound and a few pyrotechnics too! Robert was then joined by Michael Wolter, the band’s principal euphonium player, to play ‘Softly as I Leave you’. Commenting on his part in the celebrations Robert humbly stated, “I’m honoured to have been part of this milestone event.

The first half of the concert was performed exclusively by the City of Perth Band and in the second half they were joined by members from other local bands including Canning City Band, City of Albany Band, WA Fire and Emergency Band, Esperanto Brass Band, Leeming Area Community Band, Mandurah Concert Band, Melville AFA Brass Band and Victoria Brass Band to form a massed band. The rousing finale to the concert was a super arrangement by Tim Middleton of ‘Highland Cathedral’ led by the Kalamunda District Pipe Band.
