Hope, Joy and Love for NYBBGB

With March upon us, it means that there are just over four weeks until the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain’s Easter course which will culminate in their concert on Saturday 8th April at the fabulous Stoller Hall. The course will take place under the direction of Guest Conductor Stephen Cobb, with his son Philip Cobb (Principal Trumpet BBC Symphony Orchestra) joining him as Guest Soloist.

The evening promises an uplifting programme of music, centred around the theme of ‘Hope, Joy and Love’. Dr Stephen Cobb has chosen his programme with these three positive thoughts in mind. ‘Fuego’ by Paul Sharman is full of hope and optimism and a stirring start to the concert. This is followed by Dean Goffin’s joyous march ‘Crusaders’. ‘Horizon’ by Andrew Wainwright is full of hope and love, the music depicts Moses leading the Israelites to the promised land. What could be more passionate than Leidzen’s ‘Songs from the Heart’ and Eric Ball’s ‘Song of Courage’? ‘Virtuosity’ by Kenny Baker is an up-lifting solo which brings joy to listeners young and old. Karl Jenkins’ ‘Stabat Mater’ tells the story of a mother’s love for her only son. The finale to the concert is fittingly called ‘Renaissance’ meaning rebirth, perhaps referring to the world rejoicing after the last three challenging years of darkness.

The concert also includes the world première of Dorothy Gates’ new major work 'Invisible Fire', which was commissioned especially for the band. A work in three movements, it really has the theme at its heart with movement one entitled ‘Joy’, movement two ‘Love’ and movement three ‘Hope’.
