Muckle Flugga success story
Rory Boyle's 'Muckle Flugga' has won the Wind Band / Brass Band category of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors 2015 Awards.
Other composers shortlisted in the same category included: Andy Scott for A Child Like You; and Robert Saxton for Sonata for Brass Band on a Prelude of Orlando Gibbons, commissioned by Peter Bassano for City of Cambridge Band. However, it was Rory Boyle’s 2014 European test-piece, Muckle Flugga, meaning 'large steep-sided island' which took the top honour.
Simon Dobson, Lucy Pankhurst and Nigel Clarke have all received the prestigious award previously, and Gavin Higgins, who has a successful creative relationship with Tredegar Town Band was shortlisted in this year’s Small Chamber category for his The Ruins of Detroit.
Following the ceremony Alan Davey, Controller at BBC Radio 3, stated: "Contemporary music is thriving in the UK. As a cultural organisation, BBC Radio 3 prides itself on using the licence fee as venture capital for the arts; supporting and developing new artists, commissioning new works and broadcasting important industry events such as tonight's British Composer Awards. Congratulations to all the winners. It's vital we all continue to support our composers and their works, they make such an invaluable contribution to the cultural life of Britain and beyond."
Rory Boyle's 'Muckle Flugga' was commissioned by the Scottish Brass Band Association with funding from Creative Scotland.
