Brighouse win BIC 2022

Following a fantastic and truly entertaining day at the Sage, Gateshead Brighouse and Rastrick Band, under the musical direction of Russell Gray were announced as Brass in Concert Champions 2022. The seventh band to take to the stage, B&R impressed the adjudicators with its ‘Tango’ inspired programme featuring the music of Argentinian composer Piazzolla, all skillfully arranged by McElligott. The Art of Seduction began with the rousing ‘Viva Piazzolla’ , before the band was joined by professional dancers for ‘Street Tango’. It was then the turn of cornet soloist Tom Smith to wow the crowd with ‘Oblivion’ which led beautifully into the emotional ‘Adios Nonino’, where Tom was joined by the trombone section and tuba in a gorgeous opening quintet section. The piece also claimed the New Composition/Arrangement Award. ‘Libertango’ provided a fitting finale as the professional dancers joined the band to bring their ‘Programme Content’ winning set to a close.

Ian Porthouse and Tredegar had to be content with second place following their superb ‘The Ice Bird’ programme, showcasing the music of Paul Saggers. Fellow Welsh compatriots Cory completed the podium placings, although they could take consolation from winning the ‘Best Entertainment & Presentation’ award with individual honours for Tom Hutchinson and Helen Williams.

The full competition results can be viewed below and a more detailed review of the event will appear in the next issue of BBW magazine.
