Daniel Hall wins the European Composition Prize

Following fantastic performances by Treize Etoiles Band of fantastic new works for brass band, it was 22 year old Daniel Hall of England that won the 7th European Composer Competition. His work, ‘A Dialogue of Transmogrified Souls’ was declared the winner by the esteemed international adjudicating panel of Dr John Pickard, Lucy Pankhurst and Oliver Waespi.

Daniel, currently in his final year of undergraduate study at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, is no stranger to success. In January 2016 Daniel won the third John Golland Award at the Royal Northern College of Music Brass Band Festival. As his prize, the John Golland Trust commissioned a new brass band work ‘Sanctuary!’, the set test in the Premier Section of the 2019 European Youth Brass Band Contest, is the result. Daniel’s music has been performed inLithuania, Switzerland, France and at major venues in the UK, including the Barbican and The Sage. His work ‘Smoke Sketches’ was commissioned by Brass Bands England as one of the set tests for the 2017 National Youth Championships of Great Britain.

The capacity audience in the Montreux Casino clearly enjoyed all the works presented, and although both they and the band awarded their votes to Stijn Aertgeerts’ work 'Bipolarity', the decision to reward Daniel Hall with the winning prize money of €1500 was a popular one.
