Cory: 2019 European Champions!

Congratulations to Cory on another European Championship title. The Welsh outfit were guided to victory under the baton of Philip Harper, with the band’s performance of ‘Paul Raphael’s’ ‘Explorers on the Moon’ providing the real catalyst for their success. It was 3rd placed Eikanger-Bjorsvik Musikklag who found favour on the Friday evening with Ludovic Neurohr’s ‘Dear Cassandra’, however following the own choice performance the band finished 3 points behind the runners up, Paris Brass Band. Their performances under MD Florent Didier were arguably the most consistent of the weekend, placing 3rd in both halves of the contest and only narrowly missing out on the top spot by one point. Set work adjudicators Ian Bousfield, Herve Grelat and Bert Van Thienen also rewarded 3BA Concert Band with 2nd place, but they weren’t able to capitalize on this the following day. Similarly Brass Band Burgermusik Luzern were placed 2nd by the own choice judging panel of Jan Van der Roost, Thomas Reudi and Rieks van der Velde, finishing a creditable 4th place overall.

There was little doubt in Montreux’s Stravinski Auditorium on Saturday evening that Cory had produced a very special performance and most had them ‘in the mix’, but the standards produced by all the European representatives were so high that nothing could be taken for granted. The delight of the winners was clear to see in the victory celebrations, not least because the win means that the band will now be invited to compete at the 2020 European Championships in Palanga as reigning champions.

A full review and report of the complete European Championship event will appear in the next issue of BBW.
