Boscombe and Bournemouth bands present the music of Ray Steadman-Allen
Boscombe Band is hosting an open rehearsal night with guest, Bournemouth Concert Brass, at 7.45pm on 7 March.
Boscombe Bandmaster, Howard Evans, has enjoyed a long association with Ray Steadman-Allen, often featuring his music on CDs. Ray Steadman-Allen was also the inspiration behind a couple of the projects undertaken by Howard for his doctoral study, so he is very familiar with ‘RSA’s' works.
Said Howard: “Because this year’s UK ‘Area' Championship test-piece is Ray Steadman-Allen’s ‘Seascapes’ (1988), it seemed like an opportunity not-to-be-missed and to place it alongside his earlier SA published piece, 'Lord of the Sea' (pub.1957). Both pieces have some parallels, in that Ray's SA work was firstly a non-SA-conceived work, written for a BBC competition and originally called ‘Neptune’s Diadem!’ The published work, ‘Lord of the Sea’, was given a new third movement and premièred by The International Staff Band at Regent Hall in London, in 1956, whilst the second movement is also titled ‘Seascapes!’”
Howard added: “I thought that my involvement with both Boscombe and Bournemouth bands, and both works, gave a great opportunity to place them alongside each other. Other pieces to be featured on this evening include the Festival march, ‘The Scarlet Jersey’ and ‘Evening Hymn’.”
