BiC announces adjudicators

The adjudicating panel for the 2018 Brass in Concert Championship has been announced. The judges making the all important decisions at Sage Gateshead on Sunday 18th November are:

Quality of Performance: Nick Grace and Roger Argente
Programme Content: Chris King
Entertainment & Presentation: Jeremy Wise and Terry Carter
Soloists: Owen Farr

Brass in Concert Chairman John Woods stated: "We're delighted to be able to reveal such a high-quality panel of judges. All are, of course, vastly experienced professional musicians, with our Quality of Performance adjudicators Nick Grace and Roger Argente complementing the musical quality background of the festival.

“Retired Principal Director of Music of HM Royal Marines, Nick Grace was a member of panel in 2017. Furthermore, Roger Argente brings experience from the orchestral world, brass education, as a session musician in the movie industry and one of the main drivers of the Superbrass ensemble.

“Entertainment & Presentation will be overseen by Jeremy Wise, who has previously conducted at Brass in Concert, and Terry Carter, who has vast experience in the broadcast and media industries.

“Programme Contest judge Chris King has masterminded many musical programmes for the British Army as the Bandmaster of the Band of the Grenadier Guards, while Owen Farr is one of the finest brass soloists, having been a Brass in Concert Solo award winner in 2009 and 2014."

Brass in Concert will continue with its marking system where ‘Quality of Performance’ will account for 60% of the points awarded, while Entertainment & Presentation and Progamme Content will account for 20% each.

John Woods commented: "After every Brass in Concert Festival, we examine every aspect of the weekend and this year we once again took the opportunity to consult and meet with competing bands. As such, with a highly skilled adjudication panel in place, we remain confident that the existing scoring system satisfies the current needs of the event and preserves its status as the leading entertainment contest in the world."

John was keen to highlight some of the other musical treats available over the Brass in Concert weekend stating, "We have an appealing performance lined up for the gala concert, with Foden's and Matt Ford presenting 'Sinatra and the Swing Legends'. There will also be our popular Elementary workshops, taster sessions and a performance by Manger Musikklag from Norway on offer. Saturday afternoon will also see a free masterclass by a Yamaha artist, with further announcements to follow, including the continuation of the 'Audience Vote' award."
