Decca Records has just released a CD marking 25 years of Britpop and its iconic ‘anthems’, featuring none other than Cory Band led by its MD, Philip Harper, produced by the big ticket pop industry producer, Rupert Christie. Nicola Bland finds out why a monolithic recording company opted for a brass band to celebrate a pop industry birthday.

Durham’s ten-day BRASS Festival is back with a bang and a programme guaranteed to entice the brass band aficionado, whilst Germany’s Bad Schlema welcomes ensembles from 40 different nations and BrassFestUK involves 170 bands! RETROSPECTIVE:
HAMMONDS TRIUMPHS OVER TIME
The Spring Festival and, in particular, the Grand Shield provided the usual sharp contrasts of standard and interpretive approach as bands jostled in the snakes and ladders game of requalifying for the British Open. Christopher Thomas brings Grand Shield action, Malcolm Wood the Senior Cup and John James the Senor Trophy.
