Cory 2018 Composition Competition

The Cory Band has announced details of its 2018 Composition Competition in collaboration with The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. The band is looking for entrants to compete for three finalist places where their works will be performed at a special concert at the RWCMD in May.

Works are welcome from composers of any age or nationality, with the Cory MD selecting the three to be judged by a panel that also includes the renowned trumpet player John Wallace and Cory's musical consultant Nigel Seaman.
The winning entry will receive an immediate second performance in the night, and will also be published, recorded and performed by Cory throughout the year.

Philip Harper told commented: "This has developed into a really successful event, and since its inception has helped create over 60 new works. Cory has really enjoyed performing and recording the previous winning entries by Lewis Furber, Richard Haydn Taylor and Andy Wareham and at this year's event we are delighted to be joined by The Wallace Collection with which the band will perform a new work by Scottish composer Jay Capperauld, which will only add to the spirit of celebration of new brass music during the evening."

He added: "One of the new features to the competition this year is a video which the band and I have created, which aims to give first-time composers an idea of where to start when scoring for the brass band. In previous years I've felt that some entries struggled to grasp the idiosyncrasies involved here, and so hopefully our user-friendly guide will encourage more composers to feel confident in their creating!"
