High profile TV broadcast for Lewis-Merthyr
On Christmas Day, South Wales' Lewis-Merthyr Band will feature in a national television broadcast with the legendary international baritone soloist, Sir Bryn Terfel.
The programme entitled, Taith Bryn Terfel: Gwlad y Gân, sees the singer travel to four areas of Wales to meet interesting people and perform songs that are relevant to those particular regions. Whilst in the Rhondda, Sir Bryn visits the former Lewis-Merthyr Colliery - now Rhondda Heritage Park, and performs Arwel Hughes' magnificent setting of Cwm Rhondda with Lewis-Merthyr Band, under the baton of Craig Roberts.
The arrangement for brass was specially transcribed for Bryn and the band by Welsh composer Christopher Painter, and also features an "amen" ending written by the composer's son, the famous orchestral conductor Dr. Owain Arwel Hughes CBE.
The performance will be broadcast on S4C at 9:00pm on Christmas Day, and will then be available to view for a further 30 days online. (In Wales, S4C is available on Freeview 4, Sky 104, Virgin TV 166 and Freesat 104. In England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, S4C is available on Sky 134, Freesat 120 and Virgin TV 166.)
The broadcast closes an excellent year for Lewis-Merthyr which also saw the band win the WWBBA and Welsh League First Section Championships. The band wishes all its members, friends, partners and supporters a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year throughout 2018.
