Shirley Band do ‘Brass at Christmas’
The Shirley Band, a first section brass band from Solihull in the West Midlands, held its annual family Christmas concert, 'Brass at Christmas’ on 1 December, conducted by Dave Bishop-Rowe and attended by special guest Solihull MP, Julian Knight. The concert, sponsored by Wadsworths Solicitors, was held at St James Church, Stratford Road in Shirley, Solihull.
The band, which will be 100 years old in 2019, performed a range of festive music and carols arranged for band; and also featured soloists from the band as well as from Solihull Music Service’s Solihull Youth Brass Band.
Brian Johnson, Shirley Band’s secretary said: "We were delighted once more in having a full-house for our annual Christmas concert. We again welcomed soloists from Solihull Youth Brass Band, and were proud to feature our very own talented soloists too. December is always a busy time for the band, with us performing in concert and in small groups across Solihull and the Birmingham region.
“This time, we were also delighted that our local MP attended as special guest, giving the opportunity to tell him more about the history of the band, our involvement in the local community, as well as our plans for our centenary.”
Richard Bull, conductor of Solihull Youth Brass Band, added: “I’m delighted that Shirley Band once more invited some of our young players to perform alongside the band in concert. This was a great opportunity for some of our young talented players to benefit from playing with an experienced band like Shirley Band.”
