Death of Roy Bennett

Brass Band World is sad to report of the death of Roy Bennett (centre), who passed away peacefully in his sleep on 18th September. Beloved husband to Ursula, dad to Dawn and Mark, father in law to Frank and Jane and bampa to Tom, Kate, Will and Lucy, he was also a former Chairman of the Penclawdd Band from west Wales, and the first Chairman of the National Youth Brass Band of Wales. A primary school headteacher by profession, he attended the early residential courses of the National Youth Band of Wales as a house tutor, whilst his son, Mark played flugel horn and cornet.  He was also an enthusiastic supporter of the highly successful West Glamorgan Youth Band, working alongside his friend and conductor Tony Small in Swansea.

Tony commented: "Everyone associated with Penclawdd Band and I am sure throughout the brass banding community of Wales, is saddened by the news of Roy's death.  He was a wonderful man and a very fine musician in his own right. He had a tremendous singing voice that was heard in many leading amateur shows, as well as on the band bus after a contest or concert if he could be persuaded. He will be greatly missed."

The Funeral will take place on Friday 29th September at St Michael's Church, Manselton at 1.30pm followed by cremation at Llanelli Crematorium at 3pm. Donations in lieu of flowers to Penclawdd Brass Band c/o St. James Funeral Home, 31 St. James Gardens, Uplands, Swansea, SA1 6DT
