2017 Doctor Martin Wainstone Cup

Reg Vardy under the direction of MD, Russell Gray successfully reclaimed the Doctor Martin Wainstone Cup for the fifth time. The contest continues to provide a very lucrative and entertaining event to conclude the traditional British Open Championship weekend.

Building on the success of last year's event, the Princess Alexandra Auditorium at Yarm School attracted eight bands, including  defending champion Co-operative Funeralcare who broke their journey home from Symphony Hall in order to compete. With prizes totalling £8,000, excellent facilities and organisation, the competition has a secure long term future and a growing supportive audience.

Reg Vardy's comprehensive victory saw them pick up the prizes for the 'Best March', solo euphonium Andrew Hedley took the 'Best Soloist' title in addition to coming top with their test piece offering of 'Fraternity'

Speaking about the win, Russell Gray commented, "I knew we had to do the same as last year and play the same piece as Co-op. 'Fraternity' is a great piece that shows off our ambition to return to the British Open, so it meant the players also had a taste of just what it takes to perform at that level as well this weekend."

For the Cockerton Band organisers, the latest Doctor Martin Wainstone Cup was a terrific success with the event now firmly placed within the autumn contest calendar.
