Stars and stripes in their eyes
Rita Arendz brings a delegate’s over-view of the recent North American Brass Band Summer School in Ontario, where a clutch of top British and American brass band exponents left delegates with stars and stripes in their eyes!
Although popular during the late 19th Century, today the British Style brass bands (other than those of the Salvation Army) are no more than 20 in all of Canada, the majority of them in Ontario. So it would seem unlikely for 50 brass players to congregate for an intensive 11-day course in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Just having completed its third year, the North American Brass Band Summer School (NABBSS) is reigniting the passion of brass bands in its Canadian delegates and for the whole world to see! NABBSS not only had an exciting team of expert tutors and soloists under the skillful guidance of Acting Course Director, David Childs, but also participated in the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo - the world’s largest annual indoor tattoo.

James Gourlay - guest conductor: “The NABBSS is an excellent programme, which offers delegates the opportunity to participate in the RNISIT - a world-class event. Delegates, working with a team of internationally famous musicians, also perform a range of concerts in the lovely city of Halifax. An uplifting and fun experience - I can highly recommend to all.”
