Pro Platform: David Childs interviews Paul Young
In this month’s Pro Platform feature, David Childs chats to Paul Young, Principal Trumpet of the Ulster Orchestra for 40 years.
The former Enfield Citadel Band member charts his musical highlights and says that the ‘pro’ music business and the role of the professional musician have changed dramatically in the last few years, commenting: “Firstly, funding has considerably decreased, and fees and salaries have most definitely not kept up with inflation. The role of the professional musician has also evolved. We are expected to work with many different groups within the community - including people with special needs and senior citizens, as well as schools and colleges. More emphasis is placed on small groups such as quintets etc., as well as on our core function with the Orchestra. I particularly enjoy the opportunity to undertake this type of work, especially engaging with school groups. I also regularly work in the BBC, RTE and the Irish Film Orchestra…”
