Yamaha develops ‘New York’ Trumpet with Boston Symphony Orchestra

Yamaha has developed a unique model of the ‘New York’ C trumpet with the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), utlising the Yamaha ‘YM’ bell developed with the BSO and its world-renowned Symphony Hall.

With all the trademarks of a Yamaha trumpet in place (flexible sound, superb response, excellent intonation, enhanced dynamic response and excellent projection characteristics), Yamaha says the Xeno Artist ‘New York’ C Trumpet (YTR-9445NYS - YM) has the singular sound desired by one of the greatest orchestras in the world. This has been achieved with a new YM bell, which is thinner and flares more steeply, contributing to the instrument’s ‘exceptionally well-defined pitch centre and flexible tone.’

Said Jeremy Smith, Yamaha’s new Product Specialist - Band and Orchestral: “This is an exciting new option offering players a more soloistic, brighter tone, whilst maintaining the flexible tone of the Xeno ‘New York’.

According to Bob Malone, Director, B&O Atelier, Yamaha Corporation of America, the BSO trumpet players immediately embraced the new model. A formal development process then ensued to adjust the instruments according to each player's preference and said Bob: "Our relationship with each of the members of the BSO trumpet section reflects an alignment of values, and a shared passion for making and putting out the best music possible."

Thomas Rolfs, BSO principal trumpet, also enthused: "Choosing a horn is a very personal decision and it's very unusual that all four of us, as a group, came to this conclusion. We've received very positive feedback from our music director, Andris Nelsons, from other players in the Orchestra and from our audiences."

Yamaha also launched the euphonium and tuba versions of its next generation SILENT Brass models, which comprise a freer-blowing Pickup Mute and the Personal Studio,

The Pick-up Mute combines the characteristics of a high-performance regular mute with an internal microphone to capture your sound. Significantly smaller and lighter than previous models, it improves balance when playing, but offers approximately the same muting efficiency, along with stable pitch over a wide range and unrestricted breath flow. The Personal Studio features Yamaha’s exclusive Brass Resonance Modeling and, used together, the Pickup Mute and Personal Studio deliver the natural acoustic tone heard when playing without a mute, so it feels like you are playing mute-free.
